Description
Volunteer would provide social interaction
for a francophone disabled client
and accompany her on outings into
the community. Because of her disability
and lack of family support in Moncton,
the client is very socially isolated.
She would greatly appreciate a
companion.
Qualifications
The client is 35 years old, cognitively
intact (and very intelligent), and in
a wheelchair. She has a disease that
affects her muscles. Her speech is affected
and she is sometimes difficult to understand.
The volunteer should be French speaking
and preferably female.
Ideally, she whould have a car for outings.
Strength and energy would be an advantage
as would any experience with those in
a wheelchair/with a disability. If the
volunteer was interested in helping the
client with her communication (speech)
that would be greatly helpful, but not
required. The primary requirement is
that the volunteer provide social stimulation
and company.
Leader: Sheila Pugsley
Start: ASAP
End: ASAP
Continuing: yes
Weekly time commitment: approx 3-4 hours
and more if possible.
Time arranged with volunteer: yes
Training: if the volunteer was able to
help the client with communication I
(speech pathologist) would provide training
with regards to this. In addition, I
will provide the volunteer with strategies
to use every day to facilitate communication
with the client. The client has a caregiver
a few hours a day and the caregiver could
provide information regarding needs related
to the client`s disability (wheelchair,
etc.) |
